How to create a contact
Creating Contacts correctly ensures clean data, proper ownership, and accurate reporting.
- Click Create contact in the top right corner.
- In HubSpot, navigate to CRM → Contacts → Contacts.
- Fill in the following fields
- First Name
- Last Name
- Salutation
- Contact Owner (assign if known)
- Job Title
- Lead Source → Select where the contact came from. Examples:
- Exhibition / Trade Show
- Self-prospecting (outreach by Sales)
- Inbound (web form, webinar, gated content)
- Partner referral
- Purchased list (if applicable)
Required fields (must be filled in):
- Phone Number
- Associate contact with company
Strongly recommended fields:

Why this matters: Lead Source is key for tracking ROI on marketing and sales activities. Always choose the most accurate source — if unsure, ask your manager before saving.
- Set this contact as a marketing contact 🙅🏻♂️
- 👉 Leave this field blank.
- Why: Only contacts explicitly flagged by Marketing should be set as “marketing contacts.” Incorrect use can affect email limits and add unnecessary costs.
- Associate the contact with a company (required).
- Associate the contact with a deal (optional).
- If this contact is already part of an opportunity, link them directly to the deal.
- If not, you can leave this blank.
- Review the information and click Create contact
